2022 Federal Election Policy Statement

Australian Dairy Farmers (ADF), the peak body representing dairy farmers nationally, has been advocating for Australian dairy farmers for almost 80 years, making it one of the oldest farming organisations in the country.

Recently, higher prices, good seasonal conditions and strong demand for dairy products from consumers has seen a period of profitability across the industry. The sector is well positioned to play a key role in supporting the Australian Government’s COVID-19 recovery, regionalisation and Ag2030 agendas and achievement of sustainability targets.

To that end, ADF has released a 2022 Federal Election Policy Statement, which was compiled following consultations with ADF members and stakeholders. The statement details a series of objectives, strategies and initiatives proposed by ADF for the purpose of making people and the planet healthier in the future. It seeks political support for policies driving nutritional health, regional jobs and on-farm sustainability and productivity in the dairy industry.

Objectives

Objective 1. Improve nutritional health in Australia and abroad
  • Resolve malnutrition in residential aged care
  • Restore truth in labelling for nutritional benefit
  • Increase international trade and market access
  • Maintain the live export trade
  • Make supply chains fair, transparent and competitive
Objective 2. Grow jobs and liveability in the regions with planning and investment
  • Resolve dairy’s workforce shortage and capability deficits
  • Provide a more consistent approach to workplace COVID-19 restrictions
  • Reduce the urban–rural divide
Objective 3. Increase sustainability and productivity through innovation and markets
  • Strengthen the agriculture RDC system
  • Build resilience and responsiveness to climate change
  • Support natural capital markets and environmental stewardship
  • Maintain strong border controls and program funding for biosecurity
  • Drive adoption of digital technologies on farm
  • Improve measurement of dairy farm performance
